The Benefits of Scleral Lenses for People with Keratoconus

2023 | Contact Lenses

Are you tired of struggling with distorted vision and discomfort due to keratoconus? Do you ever wish you could wear contact lenses instead of eyeglasses to correct your vision? If so, scleral lenses may be the solution you’ve been looking for. At Nova Vision Center, we specialize in fitting patients with scleral lenses, a type of contact lens that can provide a range of benefits for people with keratoconus.

What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition in which the cornea (the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye) becomes thin and cone-shaped. This can cause vision distortion and impaired vision. The exact cause of keratoconus is not fully understood, but it is thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Keratoconus typically develops in people in their teenage years or early twenties and usually affects both eyes. Symptoms of keratoconus include blurred vision, light sensitivity, distorted vision, and difficulty seeing at night.

Because of the irregular surface of the eye, wearing standard contact lenses for vision correction is too uncomfortable for most people with keratoconus; however, scleral lenses are a great option to correct vision.

What are scleral lenses?

Scleral lenses are a type of contact lens that is designed to cover the entire cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye). They are often used to correct vision in people who have conditions that affect the shape of the cornea, such as keratoconus, as well as other vision impairments such as severe nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Scleral lenses are custom-made to fit the individual wearer’s eye and are filled with a sterile saline solution, which helps to keep the eyes hydrated and comfortable throughout the day. In addition to correcting vision, scleral lenses can also provide a protective barrier for the cornea, helping to reduce the risk of further damage or complications from conditions such as keratoconus.

Improved vision

Scleral lenses can provide better vision than eyeglasses for people with keratoconus. They are custom-made to fit the eyes and effectively correct for the irregular shape of the cornea caused by keratoconus, which can be difficult for eyeglasses to do. Scleral lenses can also provide a more stable, comfortable fit than eyeglasses, which can be especially beneficial for people with keratoconus.

Scleral lenses are larger and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye), making them more comfortable to wear than traditional contact lenses that rest on the cornea.

Scleral lenses can act as a protective barrier for the cornea, helping to reduce the risk of further damage or complications from keratoconus.
